SAN ANTONIO – Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident involving an 18-wheeler that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday on IH-10 near Dominion Drive.
The San Antonio Police Department reported that the crash took place around 6:00 a.m. on May 22 when the driver of an 18-wheeler rear-ended a 40-year-old woman who was driving a small Ford Fiesta before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement stated that the driver of the 18-wheeler failed to stop after the incident and drove for 20 miles before abandoning the truck near Bowie and Crockett street by the Shops at Rivercenter in downtown San Antonio.
NEWS 4 said that a fellow driver noticed the 18-wheeler with extensive front-end damage and contacted police.
SAPD added that when they arrived at where the 18-wheeler was abandoned, it still had pieces from the victim’s car stuck underneath.
Investigators reported that a second person who was in the 18-wheeler at the time of the accident stayed behind to give law enforcement information about the driver. KSAT reported that the individual said he was asleep in the back of the rig and felt something but didn’t think anything of it.
Police described the suspected driver as a male approximately 6’2” or 6’3” tall with short dreadlocks, wearing a burgundy shirt and gray pants.
Officers said that when the driver is found, they could face a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid.
The San Antonio Police Department is currently reviewing area security footage downtown in hopes of finding the suspect.
At this time, the identity of the female victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to SAPD public information office Doug Greene, has not been released.
The driver is currently still at large, said SAPD.
