LAKE CONROE – A paddlewheel boat that ran aground on Lake Conroe on Saturday led to the rescue of over 80 people.
The vessel, named Southern Empress, had run aground near Bird Island in the southern part of Lake Conroe at approximately 11:00 p.m. when the boat was reportedly attempting to dock.
It was said that a fishing boat got in the way of the vessel and didn’t move after the captain urged them to do so several times. Due to a gust of wind, the boat hit a sandbar and became stuck.
Officials stated that 83 people were on board and were successfully rescued from the vessel by several other fellow boaters who responded to the scene. Passengers said that the boats did not realize that the boat was stuck until they were told.
Assisting at the scene was Conroe Fire, North Mongomery County Fire, and the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Lake Patrol.
None of the passengers on board reported injuries and the boat was able to be dislodged by towboats.
