Unfavorable water conditions lead to drowning at Mustang Island Beach

CORPUS CHRISTI – Police have identified the body of a man that was pulled from the water at Mustang Island Beach on Sunday, July 7th.

According to the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office, the man was identified as Ramon Cortez III, age 51, from San Antonio.

Cortez was enjoying a trip to the beach with his family and went into the water for a swim, according to police. Cortez’s family lost sight of him while he was in the water and that is when they dialed 911.

First responders recovered Cortez from the waters of Mustang Island Beach and rushed him to Bay Area Hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Police officials stated the water conditions were “not favorable” on Sunday, and it was likely that Cortez was caught in a riptide which caused him to drown.
