WESLACO – It was announced by Texas Department of Public Safety that Trooper Moises Sanchez has passed away Saturday from surgery complications, after being shot twice during a routine traffic accident.
“Today is an extremely difficult day for Texas, as we have lost one of our finest, Trooper Moises Sanchez,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw.
“Trooper Sanchez demonstrated great strength and bravery as a Texas Trooper, and we will honor his selfless service and sacrifice forever. Our DPS family is deeply saddened by his passing, and we’re asking for continued prayers and support for Trooper Sanchez’s wife and three children as well as his countless friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Trooper Sanchez approached a two-vehicle crash on April 6th in Edinburg. That’s when police say the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene and later shot Trooper Sanchez in the shoulder and head.
The suspect, Victor Alejandro Godinez, 24, was charged with Attempted Capital Murder of a Police Officer. DPS says that he will now face the charge of Capital Murder of a Police Officer.
Trooper Sanchez, who was 49-years-old, made miraculous strides of improvement over the past several months, and over the past several months, the Trooper and his family have received an outpouring of support by countless members of the public, fellow law enforcement partners and hospital staff. DPS says they remain extremely grateful for their generosity and support.
