Six arrests made for human smuggling attempt at Laredo immigration checkpoint

US Customs and Border Protection

LAREDO – Five undocumented immigrants and a US Citizen were arrested when they attempted to illegally cross a Laredo checkpoint on Friday, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The smuggling attempt was foiled in the afternoon hours of August 2 when Border Patrol agents came into contact with a white tractor-trailer in the primary inspection lane at the immigration checkpoint on IH 35 north of Laredo.

During the inspection, the driver reportedly gave agents consent to a non-intrusive VACIS vehicle scan.

The scan was said by CBP to have revealed several anomalies in the sleeper area of the tractor-trailer, which promped further inspection.

Five individuals, said to be Mexican nationals, were discovered hiding in the sleeper area of the tractor, according to CBP.

Officials stated that all of the undocumented immigrants, along with the US citizen driver were placed under arrest and processed accordingly.

The case was referred to Homeland Security Investigations. The tractor-trailer was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.
