Second suspect charged with murder after Sheriff’s Deputy was shot to death during traffic stop

EL PASO – A second suspect said to be involved in the shooting death of El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Herrera has been arrested and charged in connection to the crime, stated El Paso authorities.

Deputy Herrera passed away on Sunday, March 24 after succumbing to his injuries which were sustained during a traffic stop in San Elizario on March 22.

During the traffic stop, police reported that Facundo Chavez, 27, was the driver of the vehicle Herrera had pulled over. Chavez was said to have exited the vehicle, shot Herrera 15 times and then fled the scene.

The passenger of the vehicle, named as Arlene Pina, 20, was arrested at the scene but was later released. An arrest affidavit, however, stated that on police video, Pina is seen speaking Spanish to Chavez saying “beat that (expletive)” after the gunshots were fired.

Sheriff Richard Wiles said that even though Pina didn’t pull the trigger, they believe she was actively involved.

Initially, Pina told police that a third person was inside the vehicle and was responsible for the shooting but further investigation proved that to be false, according to El Paso law enforcement.

Court records show that Pina was charged with capital murder and has a bond of $1 million.

Chavez was charged with capital murder.
