Reward offered by Texas Game Wardens for information about discarded cast net that resulted in six sea turtle deaths

NUECES COUNTY – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Law Enforcement Division announced that they are offering a reward for information regarding the illegal discarding of a cast net at the Packery Channel jetties which resulted in the drowning deaths of six green sea turtles.

A Nueces County Game Warden was called to the scene where the turtles were found on Tuesday, July 16 off Hwy 261 at the Packery Channel.





According to the Texas Game Warden, a reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to the person or persons responsible for the death of the turtles.

According to the Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery, sea turtles can be found in the Gulf of Mexico and the local bay waters year-round noting that the Packery Channel jetties are a popular place for juvenile green sea turtles.





Anyone who sees an injured, hooked, or entangled sea turtle in a fishing line should contact 361-949-8173 ext. 226 or 1-866-TURTLE-5.

“Do not touch. All sea turtles are threatened or endangered. Under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, it is unlawful for any person to “take”, possess, sell, or transport endangered or threatened species,” said the Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery. “‘Take’ is defined as harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect, or to attempt to engage in any such conduct.”





The organization continued to say that on people or organizations with appropriate State and Federal permits are legally allowed to possess a sea turtle or sea turtle parts and intentional harassment can result in jail time along with fines up to $100,000.
