DEL RIO – Over 180 Haitian nationals were arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents this past week while attempting to illegally enter the United States, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
During the past week, CBP stated that agents at the Del Rio Station came into contact with larger groups of Haitian nationals. The total of over 180 individuals that were apprehended stemmed from a large group of 44 illegal immigrants.
CBP reported that previously, on June 11, agents at the Del Rio Station arrested a group of 14 people said to be from Haiti.
CBP added that prior to this week’s arrests, since October 1, 2018, 17 Haitians were taken into custody.
“Del Rio Sector’s total apprehensions to date this year are in excess of 36,000, already more than double the total number of arrests made during the previous fiscal year,” stated CBP. “More than 29,000 of the individuals arrested this year, over 80 percent, are from approximately 44 countries other than Mexico.”
The immigrants that were arrested were all medically evaluated before they were processed accordingly.
