TEXAS – As of September 1st, 2019, the consequence for stealing packages from porches will be a lot more severe.
A law will go into effect that will make it a felony to steal anything considered mail, this includes all sealed items, such as letters and packages, as well as postcards.
This crime is measured as a first-degree felony if you steal from more than 50 people, a second-degree felony if you steal from 20-50, and a state felony if you steal from less than 10.
Criminals are warned about the new law, under House Bill 37, if you are arrested and convicted, you can spend 6 months to 10 years in prison, as well as pay a substantial fine ranging from $4,000-$10,000.
The chargers for this crime can also be elevated if it involves identity theft, the disabled, or the elderly, and one company that support this new law is Amazon.
