MANSFIELD – A 9-year-old was allegedly murdered on Saturday and her aunt is facing a capital murder charge, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
Investigators said that they believe the aunt, Mercia Sneed, 42, hurt her niece, Melodi Sneed, so badly resulting in the child to go into cardiac arrest.
Officers arrived at the home in the 4200 block of Eagle Drive at around 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. Although attempts to save her life were made by first responders, Melodi was pronounced deceased at an area hospital at 1:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, July 31, Melodi’s death was ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office but her cause of death has not been released yet.
Police said that initially, the aunt was arrested for Injury to a Child with an ordered bond of $500,000 but the charge was later upgraded to Capital Murder.
Sneed was taken to the Tarrant County Jail.
Police said that no other family members are being investigated for Melodi’s death at this time.
