KERR COUNTY – The election for Sheriff is about 8 months away, and now is the time to get to know every candidate, their background, their stance on certain issues, and if they are suitable for the position. The latest candidate to throw his hat into the ring is Texas native Larry Leitha.
Leitha is a dedicated father of four children and is a firm believer in volunteering within his community of Kerr County. He has served the community on his own time as a member of Center Point Independent School District Board, Little League President, and V. President, Hill Country District Livestock Association member, Center Point Athletic Booster President and V. President, and coach and fundraiser coordinator for various youth activities.
Leitha has devoted his life to law enforcement, after graduating from Center Point High School in 1984, Leitha continued his education and received his associate degree in applied science from San Antonio College, from where he successfully completed the San Antonio College Law Enforcement Academy training program and the Department of Public Safety Trooper Training Academy in 1994.
According to a press release, for the past 29 years, Leitha had been active in law enforcement including positions with Medina County Sheriff’s Department as deputy, Devine Police Department as a patrol sergeant and field training officer, and Texas Department of Public Safety trooper. Leitha served as narcotics sergeant and special agent for Kerr, Kendall, Gillespie, and Bandera counties, including federal narcotics investigations in Maverick, Gonzalez, and McMullen County. He has also worked alongside ATF, DEA, and ICE special agents in investigating human trafficking, illegal weapons, and counterfeit currency. Leitha also worked narcotics smuggling under Operation Secure Texas as well as participated with San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff’s Department’s Violent Crime Task Force.
In the press release Leitha stated, “If elected Kerr County Sheriff, I intend to utilize my 29 years experience in law enforcement and over 5,000 hours in law enforcement training, my relationships with various law enforcement agencies, and my business knowledge to enhance the performance of the duties of my office. My goal as Kerr County Sheriff would be to invest in the latest training methods and technologies to make sure my staff has the latest and best equipment to be tough on crime. I intend to keep Kerr County a safe and desirable place to live. To that end, I am announcing my intent to run for Kerr County Sheriff in the 2020 election and would appreciate your support.”
Leitha has received several awards and certifications for his dedication and excellent work performance. Those accomplishments include TCOLE Peace Officer Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Master Peace Officer, and Texas DPS Division Director’s Award. Leitha has also had the honor of performing unique assignments such as serving on protective detail for the Governor and national elected officials such as Congressmen Paul Ryan and Steve Scalise. Leitha’s experience and participation in statewide emergency events also earned him a position on the Regional Accident Reconstruction Team and the Regional Civil Disturbance Management Team.
