UPDATE: Driver arrested two weeks after video surfaces appearing to show him speeding past unloading school bus

UPDATE – It was reported that the individual who was captured on camera speeding through a school bus stop sign last month has been arrested.

Police stated that the suspect, Julio Coreas, 18, was arrested on September 11.

During the investigation, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and his team stated that there was “little hope of holding someone accountable.”

“Thank God that little girl reacted to what I believe is the reckless indifference and the willful disregard for a state law that’s designed to protect the most precious cargo of any vehicle on our roadways and that’s our children,” said Acevedo.

The child’s mother, Josephine Kirk-Taylor said this in response to the arrest, “I really hope that we as a community can pay attention and save our children by following the traffic laws so that this doesn’t keep recurring. Children have lost their lives due to these matters, but I hope this is a lesson to all reckless drivers to just stop and let the children cross the street. It takes 10 seconds.”

Coreas was charged with reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor.

HOUSTON – A mother is sharing a video on social media warning drivers to follow the laws and stop for school buses after her young child was almost struck by a speeding car in a Houston neighborhood.

Josephine Kirk-Taylor uploaded the video on August 28 which shows her daughter exiting the bus about to cross the road when a blue Toyota sped past, almost hitting the girl.

“Since it was her first day and all I wanted to record this special moment,” said Kirk-Taylor. “Before letting her off the school bus the driver put up her stop signs and let my daughter off the bus. There was a careless driver speeding and also breaking the law not stopping at the school bus stop sign so that my daughter could cross the street.”

“I was waiting with her siblings at the same spot she was picked up from, I had no idea that she would be dropped off on the opposite side of the street,” she said.

Kirk-Taylor continued to write that she called the police with the driver’s license plate number but they were unable to do anything.

“I didn’t care if they had just giving him a speeding ticket I felt like something needed to be done,” added the mother. “This careless driver did not even stop after seeing my child and myself scared for my child’s life.”

Kirk-Taylor has asked for this video to be shared in hopes that it can help protect other children.
