HOUSTON, Texas — A man who barricaded himself and his 1-year-old child in his apartment was taken into police custody Tuesday morning following an hours-long standoff with SWAT.
According to sources from the Chronicle, a woman arrived at her boyfriend’s apartment with their biological child at approximately 1:30 a.m. early Tuesday morning.
Houston Police Department Lt. Rick Besselman said the woman had gone to the man’s apartment located in the 500 block of Schweikhardt Street in hopes of working through their relationship issues.
Lt. Besselman says the conversation eventually took a turn and the man began beating and choking the child’s mother.
Sources say the woman escaped the alleged attack but forgot her child inside the apartment.
Lt. Besselman says officers quickly arrived on scene and tried convincing the man to come outside peacefully, but the man refused.
The woman reportedly told officers he had a gun in the apartment, but Lt. Besselman says police never believed the child was in danger.
At one point during the standoff, the man had reportedly sent a photo of the sleeping child to officers on scene during negotiations with HPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team.
The man surrendered around 6:45 a.m.
According to Lt. Besselman, the man had two felony-drug related warrants from Harris and Fort Bend counties.
He will reportedly be facing an additional felony warrant on an assault charge.
Lt. Besselman stated the child will likely be turned over to family members.
