Former NFL player and Midland native Cedric Benson dies in motorcycle vs. auto accident in Austin

AUSTIN – Former Texas Longhorn football player Cedric Benson, 36, reportedly died following an automobile versus motorcycle accident in Austin late Saturday evening.

According to the Austin-Travis County EMS, the accident occurred in the 5600 block of Mount Bonnell Road and involved four people, Benson included.

ATCEMS stated that Benson and a female in her 30’s were pronounced deceased on the scene with the other two individuals received non-life-threatening injuries.

An Instagram post was shared from Benson on Saturday showing his BMW motorcycle with the caption, “My Saturday evening.”

Cedric Benson was a Midland, Texas native playing for Midland Lee High School and attended The University of Texas in 2001 where he played as a running back before being picked in the fourth round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears in 2005 until 2007. In 2008, Benson played for the Cincinnati Bengals until 2011 before playing for the Green Bay Packers until 2012.

It was stated by officials that just three days prior to his death, Benson appeared in front of a Travis County courtroom and was found guilty of the lesser charge of obstruction of a passageway in connection to a drunken-driving arrest that took place in downtown Austin in 2017.

Benson was sentenced by County Court-at-Law Judge Kim Williams to two days in jail and was credited for the two days he served after his arrest.
