ODESSA – According to police, a 9th-grade student at Odessa High School is facing charges after being accused of making threats to shoot up the campus.
Ector County Independent School District stated that two students came forward to report the incident, informing school staff that the 9th-grade girl was making the threats.
According to police, when speaking with the 9th-grade student about the situation, she apparently openly admitted to making the threats.
At this time the student has been allegedly charged with making threats to use a firearm police say.
The Ector County Independent School District has released the following statement about the incident: “We always take these types or threats seriously – it is never a joking matter. This week, in particular, this type of threat hits too close to home. We want to assure our community the safety of our students and staff members is our top priority. Thank you to the students who reported this, and thank you to our school leaders and police officers who dealt with the situation quickly. It is a reminder that ‘if you see something, say something’ is first line of defense in maintaining our safety.”
Police officials did state the student did not have a weapon on her and they do not believe the staff or students were in any immediate danger.
