Three dead from Chambers County boat wreck, suspect arrested and faces multiple intoxication charges

CHAMBERS COUNTY – After responding to reports of a boat wreck on Sunday evening, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office arrived to discover a grisly scene.


The wreck took place on Sunday, June 23 at approximately 7:31 p.m. approximately half a mile from the Hugo Park Road boat ramp in the area of Old and Lost River and Cross Bayou, stated Chambers County officials.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a large wake boat type vessel struck a bass boat which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.


CCSO stated that 12 people were involved in the wreck, including seven people that were aboard the bass fishing boat, and five people that were aboard the wake/ski boat.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Precinct 6, Larry Cryer, and others were transported to area hospitals via life flight and ambulance.

The two deceased victims were identified as Laura Kay Grant, 40, of Mont Belvieu, and William Robert Bowles, 36, of Baytown. Another victim, Zachary Jackson Miles, 29, of Beach City, succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to the Hermann Memorial Hospital.


The suspect, identified as Jacob Vernon Breaux, 23, of Baytown, was taken into custody Sunday evening. Breaux was charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle. He is being held on bonds totaling $200,000.

The investigation is being led by Texas State Game Wardens from Texas Parks and Wildlife with assistance from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.
