Off-duty Bexar County deputy shot by teen attempting to burglarize his vehicle

BEXAR COUNTY – A Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported that an off-duty deputy was shot early Saturday morning by a 16-year-old attempting to burglarize his vehicle.

The incident took place in the 300 block of Bustillo Drive on the city’s south side when the teen attempted to break into his civilian vehicle parked in front of his residence.

BCSO stated that the deputy was inside his home when a family member told him that it appeared someone was inside his vehicle. The deputy went out to confront the individual and attempted to take the juvenile into custody when a struggle began which resulted in the off-duty deputy being shot once in the stomach, according to Bexar County officials.

After undergoing surgery, the 11-year veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, BCSO reported that it appears at this point that the deputy should be okay from the single gunshot wound he received from the suspect.

The teenager was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon and Burglary of a Vehicle. He was booked into the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center.

BCSO said it also seems that the juvenile was busy burglarizing property throughout the evening so they are asking for residents in the area to check their items to be sure everything is accounted for.
